France: slight drop in the swine census in 2013

The French agricultural statistics service (Agreste) has just published the provisional data of the agricultural and stockbreeding activity during 2013.

Regarding swine, in 2013, the total swine herd added up 13,487,588 heads, slightly lower than in year 2012 (13,759,913). The main drops happened in the group of sows > 50 kg, with a decrease by 2.6% with respect to the 2012 census; and in the 20-50 kg pigs, with a fall by 5.3%. The number of boars also dropped by 3.1%.

With respect to pig production, a total of 23,932,848 animals were slaughtered. These figures are slightly lower than in 2012 (-1.9%; 24,387,873).
