France: priority to animal welfare at the abattoirs

Mr. Le Foll has confirmed his desire to appoint a person in charge of animal welfare at every abattoir.

Last October 12th, the conclusions and recommendations regarding animal protection at the abattoirs were presented, among them:

  • Increase the transparency and control the tasks at the abattoirs;
  • Strengthen the workers' training and bear in mind the work pressure;
  • Improve the practices and equipments at the abattoirs;
  • Strengthen the capacity and efficacy of the official controls.

The Minister, Mr. Stéphane Le Foll, informed that instructions will be sent as soon as possible to the prefects with the aim of strengthening the dialogue on matters regarding animal welfare at the abattoirs within the local committees.

On the other hand, Mr. Le Foll has confirmed his desire to appoint a person in charge of animal welfare at every abattoir. To this end, it will be compulsory to hold a competence certificate whose requirements are being checked.
