European Commission defines infected zone for ASF in Catalonia, Spain

The European Commission has defined the ASF infected zone in Catalonia and has applied urgent control measures to prevent its spread; the Osona region is excluded from the area.

The European Commission has adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/2489, applicable until 28 February 2026, establishing provisional emergency measures following the first confirmation of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain, specifically in Catalonia, on 28 November 2025.

According to the regulation, Spain must establish an infected zone for ASF. This area includes the regions of the Vallès Occidental, Vallès Oriental, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Maresme, Alt Penedès, Anoia, and Bages, which are officially defined as infected areas.

It should be noted that at this time, the Osona and Lluçanès regions, one of the areas with the highest concentration and productive relevance of the Catalan swine industry, are not included in the infected area delimited by the European Commission.

  • Vallès Occidental: Badia del Vallès, Barberà del Vallès, Castellar del Vallès, Castellbisbal, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Gallifa, Matadepera, Montcada i Reixac, Palau-solità i Plegamans, Polinyà, Ripollet, Rubí, Sabadell, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Llorenç Savall, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Rellinars, Sentmenat, Terrassa, Ullastrell, Vacarisses, Viladecavalls.
  • Vallès Oriental: Ametlla del Vallès, Bigues i Riells del Fai, Caldes de Montbui, Canovelles, Granollers, La Roca del Vallès, Llagosta, Lliçà d’Amunt, Lliçà de Vall, Mollet del Vallès, Martorelles, Montmeló, Montornès del Vallès, Parets del Vallès, Sant Feliu de Codines, Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana, Santa Maria de Martorelles, Vallromanes, Vilanova del Vallès.
  • Baix Llobregat: Abrera, Castellví de Rosanes, Cervelló, Collbató, Corbera de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, El Papiol, Esparreguera, Esplugues de Llobregat, Martorell, Molins de Rei, Olesa de Montserrat, Pallejà, El Prat de Llobregat, Sant Andreu de la Barca, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Climent de Llobregat, Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Torrelles de Llobregat, Vallirana, Viladecans, La Palma de Cervelló.
  • Barcelonès: Badalona, Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
  • Maresme: Alella, Cabrils, El Masnou, Montgat, Òrrius, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Mar, Teià, Tiana, Vilassar de Dalt.
  • Alt Penedès: Gelida, Sant Llorenç d’Hortons.
  • Anoia: Els Hostalets de Pierola, Masquefa.
  • Bages: Castellbell i el Vilar i Mura.

The Commission stresses the urgency of implementing these measures to curb the spread of the virus at a time when its presence in the EU poses a serious and persistent risk.

The decision will be reviewed at the next meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed, where it will be analyzed whether it is necessary to adjust or expand the measures adopted.
