In January 2021, EU agri-food exports decreased by 11% compared to January 2020, reaching a total value of €13.5 billion. Imports attained a value of €9.1 billion, 16% less than in January 2020.This decrease comes after a longer period of continuous increase in exports. This led to an agri-food trade surplus for January 2021 standing at €4.4 billion, an increase of 3.6% compared to January 2020.

On a year over year basis, the highest increases in monthly export values (January 2021 compared to January 2020, EUR million) were recorded for China (+€146m, +11%). This continued to be primarily driven by an increase in the EU exports of pig meat (+€90m, +20%), however at a slower pace than recorded in previous months due to the Chinese sanitary restrictions on pig meat imports from some EU countries. Other products with highest gains in export values to China continued to be coarse grains (+€71m), and rapeseed and sunflower oils (+€51m).
