The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the US company Cargill's animal nutrition business in Spain and Portugal by Dutch based Nutreco.

After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.

The Commission also looked at potential effects resulting from vertical links. Nutreco is present in the market for animal mixes, which are used as raw material in compound feed production and also in the downstream poultry meat market. The Commission excluded any competition concerns arising from these vertical links, given the limited share of the merging parties in the vertically linked markets and the existence of alternative suppliers of compound feed.
