EU agriculture ministers discussed how to reduce the EU’s reliance on imported feed proteins, such as soybeans, which are essential for both human and animal nutrition. They examined national diversification strategies and emphasised the need for a unified EU-level approach. Many underlined the importance of boosting EU-grown plant proteins and taking a holistic view of the food supply chain.
Ministers also highlighted that new genomic techniques could contribute to more sustainable and efficient protein production. The Council called on the Commission to propose a formal EU protein strategy.
