AT the European Union (EU) Agriculture and Fisheries Council held on Monday in Brussels, Spain's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, stated that beyond the short-term issue of prices, the Commission "must adopt the necessary measures to find alternatives" and recalled that Europe has long faced structural vulnerability in this area, as already evidenced, for example, by the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The minister reiterated that external dependence on fertilizers is one of the weak points that compromises the Union's food autonomy.
He explained that 49% of urea and 30% of ammonia, which are key inputs for fertilizer production, transit through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to higher prices for these products in recent weeks as a result of the conflict with Iran, creating once again a "very complex" situation.
