The Ministry of Agriculture, the National Statistics Office (NSO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and the European Union, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a pre-census, as part of the activities carried out prior to the execution of the VIII National Agricultural Census of the Dominican Republic.

After the Memorandum was signed, the Minister of Agriculture, Angel Estévez, thanked the subscribing organizations for their contributions to the implementation of the initiative, and stressed the importance of having up-to-date and accurate statistics on the reality of the agricultural sector for his country.

The pre-census is a data collection process on plots and farmers locations, and will constitute the census framework that will provide the basis for the organization of the national agricultural census. This process will start in early May.

The last national agricultural census in the Dominican Republic was conducted in 1982, so a new census is necessary to provide accurate and up-to-date data to help the sector authorities to improve the planning of agricultural policies.
