As recently reported, Denmark has developed a national PRRS control plan to reduce the number of positive pig farms with the aim of reducing the incidence of the disease and, in the long term, eradicating it completely from the country.

The strategy is carried out in close cooperation between the pig slaughterhouses, the Danish Veterinary Association, and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

To date, reporting PRRS status has been voluntary. With the new plan, reporting will be mandatory and all farms will be required to report their status by the end of this year.

The plan also includes a penalization in the price paid to the producer. The slaughter of pigs from PRRS-positive farms will carry an additional cost that will be established by the slaughterhouses. In the specific case of Danish Crown, which slaughters approximately 70% of Danish pigs, starting January 1, 2023, it will introduce a deduction of DKK 0.20/kg for the first 17 weeks and then increase in a stepwise manner.
