Denmark: Conversion of temporarily restricted farrowing crates

Denmark starts the conversion of temporary confinement crates during farrowing and lactation of sows ahead of the EU.

Starting October 18, Danish producers will be able to apply for funding for the conversion of farrowing rooms with loose sows or temporary restraint crates. Twenty-five million DKK will be invested from EU funds through the Danish Rural Development Agency. The subsidy corresponds to 40% of the requested investment and amounts to about 4,000 DKK per square meter of dedicated area. The conversion to free lactation will be completed by the end of 2024.

On the other hand, new EU proposals for a new animal welfare law are expected by 2023.
