According to DEFRA, the total number of pigs in the UK decreased by 1.9 %, from 4.8 million animals in June 2014 to 4.7 million in June 2015.

The main reason for this was the 2.2 % decrease in fattening pigs, largely due to the 3.6 % fall in the England figures which account for 8 1 % of the UK fatteners. The female breeding herd showed a small increase (0.3%) to 407 thousand animals .
