In the 86th General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH/OIE) that has been held in Paris (France) from May 20th to May 25th, the resolution that officially recognises Costa Rica as a Classical Swine Fever (CSF)-free country was voted.

This recognition awards Costa Rica with an official health status because the disease is not present in this country and the conditions regarding legislation, veterinary services, the strategy for the control and the eradication, the animals' identification system, the control of their movements and the laboratory diagnosis have been fulfilled.

“This international status will encourage the negotiations with third countries for reaching health agreements for the export of pigs and their products”, Mr Federico Chaverri S., General Manager of the SENASA said.

In order for Costa Rica to maintain this status it is necessary to keep implementing the health measures established in the SENASA's Epidemiologic Surveillance Program, that is in charge of the active and passive surveillance in all the national territory. “This achievement is the product of the joint efforts of the SENASA, the Costa Rican pig producers and the support by the National Pig Commission, among others”, Mr Chaverri added.

According to the 2014 Agriculture and Livestock Census, there are some 14,000 farms with pigs in the country and an approximate population of 400,000 pigs.

The last case of CSF in Costa Rica appeared in 1997.
