China: Increased pork production in first quarter

In the first three months of 2023, China's pork production totaled 15.9 million tons.

In the first quarter, China produced 24.56 million tons of pork, beef, mutton, and poultry representing a 2.5% increase of year-on-year (+610,000 tons). The output of pork, beef, mutton, and poultry increased by 1.9%, 5.1%, 5.0%, and 3.2% respectively.

Pork production totaled 15.9 million tons, an increase of 1.9% (+290,000 tons). There were 198.99 million live pigs were slaughtered nationwide, an increase of 1.7% (+3.33 million head) year-on-year.

At the end of the first quarter, the live pig inventory stood at 430.94 million head, a year-on-year increase of 2.0% (+8.42 million head) but down 21.61 million head from the previous quarter. Included in this number were 43.05 million breeding sows, a year-on-year increase of 1.2 million head.
