Mr. Angel Sartori Arellano, General Director of the SAG, lead the opening ceremony of the FNDR project: “Training, support and prevention of the EPD and other exotic diseases in the regions of Arica and Parinacota”.

The project counts on 127 million pesos allocated for the improvement of the health conditions for the pig producers in the region.

In November 2014, the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) was confirmed by Peru in the departments of Tacna and Moquegua, on the verge of entering Chile, so the Livestock Protection Department of the regions of Arica and Parinacota defined work groups in different sectors (La Ponderosa, Villa Frontera, Lluta, Acha, Azapa, Caleta Vitor, Chaca, Camarones, Zapahira and Putre), encompassing the existing pig populations. The goal is to carry out an epidemiologic survey and a thorough cadastre, with 3,500 pigs having been counted in the region, mainly raised in a family environment with great deficiencies in the health and disease prevention aspects.

Due to the situation detected, the Regional Supervisor, Ms. Gladys Acuña Rosales, gave an urgent consideration to the project presented by the SAG before the Regional Development National Funds (FNDR) for the training, assessment and the entrustment of basic supplies to the pig producers, that was unanimously approved by the Regional Council of Arica and Parinacota in 2016.

The National Director expressed the need for the collaboration of the pig producers so the PED does not appear in Chile, because if this happens, it would cause a greatly negative impact not only in the regional, but also in the national pig production.
