The project seeks to bring greater competition to the agricultural sector and to modernize its portfolio by transferring the entire Fisheries and Aquaculture institution from the Ministry of Economy. In addition, there will be new functions for the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) in the control and assurance of the food production chain.

This reorganization seeks to transform the Ministry of Agriculture into a flexible and modern entity, in accordance with changing needs and demands, and which allows the sectors that make up the portfolio to assume a leading role in the Chilean economy and improve the living conditions of its people.

The new Ministry will have two undersecretaries, one for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the other for Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The goal of President Piñera's government is to turn Chile into an agrifood power. To this end, it has developed trade agreements with the world's main economic powers (29 agreements with 65 countries), which represent 67% of the world's population and 88% of global GDP; as well as high-level phytosanitary and animal health controls.

Exports from the forestry and agricultural sector reached US$16,712 million in 2019, with an increase of almost 4% in shipments to China, Chile's largest trading partner. Meanwhile, agriculture generates nearly 750,000 jobs, representing about 10% of the country's workforce.
