According to the Secretary of agricultural policies of Brazil, Neri Geller, during the next meeting of the National Financial Board, the proposal of a minimum price for meat will be suggested.

The price paid to the pig farmers per kilo of meat has undergone significant changes during the last years, and it has normally positioned itself below the production cost, and this has given place to the adoption of emergency measures by the federal government.

For this year, the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) presented the proposal of including pig meat in the list of products protected by the Minimum Price Guarantee Policy (PGPM) as of March, the month in which, historically, the fall of prices received by the producers is emphasised, reaching a minimum in June and July. The proposal is based on the variable costs estimated by the National Company of Supplies (Conab) and the Brazilian Company of Food and Agriculture Investigation (Embrapa).
