In 2011 the number of pigs slaughtered in Brazil increased by 7.2% to 34.9 million heads.

The southern region remained the main area of pig slaughter with 65.9% of the national total. The state of Santa Catarina continues to lead the ranking of major pig slaughter areas with 26.4% of the national quota, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (18.0%) and Paraná (16.6%). Paraná is noted for its strong growth, with 1.2 million more head slaughtered, an increase of 22.2%.
