Figures published by the Ministry For Foreign Trade (Secretaria de Comercio Exterior, SECEX) show how the volume of pig meat exported from Brazil in May 2009 was 12.4% lower compared with May 2008, while the decrease in value for the same period was 38.6%.

Despite the reductions in exports in the last month, which are partly created by the fall in profitability due to the revaluation of the real against the dollar, the president of ABIPECS (Asociación Brasileña de la Industria Productora y Exportadora de de Carne de Cerdo), underlines the positive global figure for the sector in the first five months of the year, during which 240,557 tonnes were exported, an increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2008, although the value was 479.8 million dollars, equivalent to 14.4% less.
