The National Federation of Belgian meat (FEBEV), has decided to abandon the practice of surgical castration of pigs without anesthesia starting in 2012.

In this way the Federation is affirming their promise made in the context of the European Declaration on castration alternatives for pigs. In their release, FEBEV stresses that this is a voluntary initiative of the Belgian meat industry, although it would be good to have a legal basis at the EU level.

In 2010 Belgium agreed to stop practicing castration without anesthesia by 2012, and to stop practicing castration all together by the year 2018.
