Growth for Argentina's swine industry: slaughter, production, and consumption increased in 2025

These results reflect a sector with dynamic production and expanding domestic demand, but with a growing presence and pressure from imported products in the domestic market.

Slaughter on the rise: In 2025, 8,517,433 head were slaughtered, a 2.5% increase compared to 2024. Buenos Aires accounted for almost half of the total (48.8%, equivalent to 4,152,192 head), while Santa Fe and Córdoba contributed 18.6% and 16.9%, respectively. In December, slaughter reached 831,491 head, representing an 8.9% year-on-year increase and a sharp 22.0% jump compared to November.

Growing production: Pork production closed the year with 812,272 tons, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2024. In December, 76,921 tons were recorded, an increase of 12.2% year-on-year and up 17.5% compared to November.

Adjusted average weights: In December, the average carcass weight was 93 kg, a 3 kg increase compared to 2024 and a 3 kg decrease compared to November. By category, barrows averaged 92 kg and entire males/immunocastrated males 98 kg. For the year, the overall average was 95 kg, with barrows averaging 94 kg and entire males/immunocastrated males 99 kg.

Exports decline: Foreign sales totaled 12,369 tons, a 14.9% drop compared to 2024. However, the value of exports reached US$15.4 million, a 3.0% increase. In December, 1,390 tons were shipped, representing a 37.3% year-on-year increase and a slight decrease compared to November (-0.9%).

Imports growing strongly: Imports totaled 53,475 tons in 2025, a jump of 135.8% compared to the previous year, and were valued at USD 171.8 million. In December, 3,341 tons were imported, a year-on-year drop of 39.2% and 3.8% compared to November.

Trade deficit: The high volume of imports generated a deficit of US$8.7 million in December. The year-to-date negative balance reached US$156.4 million, an increase of 186.6% compared to 2024.

Apparent consumption on the rise: Total consumption reached 876,066 tons in 2025, an 8.6% increase compared to 2024. Per capita consumption was estimated at 20.5 kg/person in December, with an annual average of 18.9 kg/person.

Increased import share: Despite the growth in domestic production, imports gained ground in apparent consumption, rising from 2.9% in 2024 to 6.3% in 2025. Local production accounted for 93.7% of the total in the last year.
