The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy of Argentina announced that on Saturday, December 13, the first shipment of Argentine wheat bound for China was completed, marking a new milestone in the trade relationship between the two countries. The shipment was made from the port of Timbúes, in the province of Santa Fe, and represents the effective start of a new trade flow to one of the main players in the global wheat market.
Although the Chinese market had been formally open and authorized for Argentine wheat since January 2024, the operation has now materialized with the first shipment of the cereal.

Despite its high domestic production, which has remained stable at around 130 to 140 million tons (Mt) per year over the last decade, China has higher levels of domestic consumption. This structural gap explains its growing share as an importer in the international market: in recent years, its foreign purchases have gone from moderate volumes, between 3 and 5 Mt between 2014 and 2019, to records exceeding 13 Mt in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
For Argentina, the Chinese market represents an opportunity not only because of its sheer size, but also because opening and consolidating access would allow Argentina to increase its export potential and, at the same time, strengthen a key strategy: market diversification to reduce risks and stabilize revenues for the wheat industry.
