Trade sanctions imposed by the US on a range of European goods are to be lifted as part of the settlement to a beef dispute that has raged for more than 15 years.

Their removal will result in a more than doubling in the amount of hormone-free beef imports allowed into the EU.

The import tariffs imposed on Roquefort cheese, foie gras, truffles, chocolate, lingonberry and raspberry jams, fruit juice and pork had latterly cost EU producers £23million a year. Controls were imposed in the 1990s after the European Commission banned imports of hormone-treated beef from the US because of health concerns.
