ISU Kolmer Award recognizes research that benefits Iowans

Steve Hoff received the award for his focus on solving problems through research during the past 20 years. His work with odor mitigation strategies seeks to keep applications affordable and easily implemented and managed.

One of his more visible projects is the Community Assessment Model for Odor Dispersion. The model is used to help farmers select sites for new swine facilities that would have less impact on a community. Through his research more than 200 facilities minimized the odor impact on neighbors.

Two professors in the Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been honored for their research in mitigating livestock odors and developing environmentally beneficial cattle production.

ISU's Dean Lee R. Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research was presented today to Steve Hoff, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, and Jim Russell, professor of animal science.

The award, established with a gift from Lee and Jean Kolmer, recognizes faculty and staff in the college who have made significant contributions to improving the welfare of the people of Iowa through applied research.

The award is named for former ISU dean of agriculture Lee Kolmer, who died in 2010. Kolmer served a 14-year tenure as dean beginning in 1972.

Russell, who joined the animal science program 31 years ago, received the award for his work to improve economic and environmental sustainability of beef cow-calf production in Iowa. He’s evaluated summer and winter grazing management in integrated year-round systems and demonstrated approaches to maximize profitability in cow-calf operations.

His recent research provided grazing management practices that could minimize non-point source pollution of pasture streams. Russell has presented his research at field days, workshops and in publications.

Wendy Wintersteen, dean of the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, presented the awards to Hoff and Russell during the college’s fall convocation.
