They build on farmers' knowledge and practice, using group-based discussion, observation and experimentation, and are being facilitated by Myo Min of Myanmar’s Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD). Their goal is to support farmers' livelihoods by improving profitability and reducing disease risks on their farms. Sessions to date have discussed the high cost of commercial feed and key principles of nutrition and biosecurity. How to manage sows that are not producing milk and maximise safe piglet suckling are among the practical problems addressed. The group, comprising collaborating farmers in our focus villages boosted by interested neighbouring farmers, has been enthusiastic about the FMWs, as well as MPP's complementary Veterinary Advisory Visits, which are more traditional, training-oriented sessions.

Experimentation is beginning on culturing Azolla, a protein-rich aquatic fern which can help reduce feed costs. Farmers say they have already implemented important changes, for example biosecurity practices such as separating clean and dirty shoes. MPP aims to produce films documenting in farmers' own words what they have learned at the Farm Management Workshops and to make the films accessible to other farmers across the country.
