Generous training grants and cash prizes — worth in total more than £5000 — and the opportunity to celebrate success in style in London are offered for the third year of the awards.
“The awards have shown the tremendous talent, commitment and enthusiasm that exists among those making a career in the pig and poultry sectors,” says Emmeline Randall, product manager of Pfizer Animal Health.
“We are keen to reward those who have used training to benefit the farms on which they work and so help progress their careers — and we have seen outstanding examples in the past two years. We hope their example, too, will help show others the range of opportunities provided in today’s livestock industry.”
Those who have developed their skills through on-the-job NVQ training are entitled to enter. The pig award, organised in conjunction with the journal Pig World, is decided by a judging panel chaired by Richard Longthorp, leading pig producer and industry training chief. The poultry award is organised with the magazine Poultry World, whose readers chose the winner from three finalists featured in the publication.
In each sector there is a £2000 training grant paid through the winner’s employer, with the winners themselves receiving a £500 cash prize and a day-and-night in London including the prestigious presentation ceremony at the House of Commons in November. There is no age limit for entries.
Last year’s award presented by former Farm Minister Lord Rooker went to Zoltan Lovas who began working with pigs in his native Hungary and joined J D Leavesley in Staffordshire in 2006, and to Daniel Bush, manager of a Crown Chicken broiler unit in Norfolk.
