Immobilizing pigs when being alone

Lasso the pig with a metallic cable lasso and hold the end of the cable to a pen door or divider.

Goal

Hold lassoed pigs without depending on another person.

Description

Lasso the pig with a metallic cable lasso and hold the end of the cable to a pen door or divider.

Frequently, we must immobilize pigs in order to carry out interventions: extract blood / take tonsils samples / perform small surgical operations (e.g. stitch rectum prolapses)...

The most practical system for immobilizing a pig involves holding it by the snout with a metallic cable lasso. To do this, normally two persons are needed: one holds the animal and the other one performs the operation.

Nevertheless, sometimes we have to carry out some kind of operation on a pig whilst we are alone in the farm. With the following system we will solve the problem without external help.

We lasso the pig in the normal way and we pull until we can hold the end of the cable around a rail in the pen.

1. We lasso the pig in the normal way and we pull until we can hold the end of the cable around a rail in the pen.

We coil up the cable around the handle of the lasso.

2 and 3. We coil up the cable around the handle of the lasso.

The pig remains held on its own and it will not escape, because it always has a tendency to pull backwards.

4. The pig remains held on its own and it will not escape, because it always tends to pull backwards. The recommendable kind of lasso is a metallic cable lasso without a rigid bar (it consists only of the cable).

It is not a good option if we have to lasso many animals, but it can be of great help if we have to immobilize a few pigs.
