Brazil - Electronic system to control animal transport

The Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Wagner Rossi, has signed a new regulation that defines the criteria of the Animal Transport Guide (ATG) in an electronic format. The new e-ATG has been adopted for live animals, ovules, and other reproduction materials throughout the country.

Mexico trucking dispute agreement reached

President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon have reached an agreement to resolve the dispute over cross-border trucking. Mexico had instituted tariffs in retaliation for the United States not complying with the trucking provision of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The provision was supposed to become effective in December 1995.

European Union - EFSA assesses welfare risks to animals during transport

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare was asked to deliver a Scientific Opinion on the welfare of animals during transport. An ad hoc expert working group was established in response to the request which made use of the information provided by stakeholders during the Technical Meeting held on 13 October 2010. The scientific opinion on the welfare of animals during transport was adopted by the AHAW Panel on 2nd December 2010.

EU - Transport of live animals - satellite surveillance and database

The Council took note of the views expressed by the Netherlands delegation, supported by Bulgaria, the Czech republic, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Austria and United-Kingdom, regarding the need of new instruments to better control and inspect international transport of live animals, such as satellite navigation systems.

The European Commission has published its annual report on barriers to trade and investment in the United States. The report focuses on some key trade barriers and measures that prevent EU exporters from tapping into the full potential of the US market. It notes some continuing concerns and highlights a number of new barriers introduced in 2008.
