Netherlands - Less phosphorus in pig feed; Macro-effects, opportunities and barriers

The Ministry of Economics, Agriculture and Innovation asked LEI to investigate the macro-economic effects of reduced-phosphorous feed. This request was translated into research into the influence of reduced phosphorous feed on the price of pig feeds, the influence on the manure surplus in kilos of phosphate, the effect on the necessary processing capacity of pig manure and the costs savings that this achieves. In addition, the research looked into the risks perceived by the animal feed industry, both for the industry itself and for pig farmers.

Australia -Livestock numbers down, pig numbers remain steady

Meat cattle numbers fell to 24 million from 2008-09 and dairy cattle numbers have continued their decline since industry deregulation, falling to 2.5 million head. Sheep numbers remain at their lowest level since 1905 and pig numbers have remained steady, but at decade-low levels.

the number of livestock in Slovenia declined further in 2010, most notably in pig and poultry breeding. Since 2006, the number of pigs had decreased from 575,000 to 395,500 in December 2010, with the number of farms breeding pigs falling by 4,000 to 31,000 in 2010.

Ireland - Teagasc launch road maps for farming and food sector: pigs

Teagasc has outlined the developments required for each of the major farming enterprises and the food sector over the next seven years to 2018. The nine Teagasc Road Maps covering dairy, suckler beef, pigs, sheep, tillage, forestry, horticulture, food and the environment, summarize the expected changes in the shape and size of the individual sectors in the context of the main market and policy issues facing Irish producers in each enterprise.
