Vietnam’s prime minister has allocated an additional VND 70.6 billion (USD3.36 million) for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to buy animal-disease vaccine and disinfection chemicals for national reserve in 2011.

Filipino livestock and hog raisers, and meat processors can now export ‘Pinoy’ livestock and pork products to the rest of the world, as the entire Philippines was recently certified free from the dreaded foot and mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) or World Organization for Animal Health.

An urgently needed increase in the retail price of pork would make a major difference in sustaining the UK pig industry, said Jim Burling, pig production manager of East Anglian Pig Co, at its second annual awards evening at Diss, Norfolk. Mr Burling said that a rise of around five per cent in retail selling prices was needed to counter the impact of record high feed prices and to halt pig producers sending their breeding stock to slaughter.

United Kingdom – FSA board agrees to take forward meat charging proposals

At its open meeting in Belfast, the Food Standards Agency Board discussed future charging for official controls on meat. Board confirmed its view that: it is not a function of the FSA to subsidise industry and if a continuing subsidy is to be provided it should come from elsewhere, providing the best possible protection for consumers from food risk should not be based on economic circumstances or the ability of an industry to pay.
