Uruguay: meat consumption increases

Total meat consumption in Uruguay increased in year 2012, rising to 98 kg per inhabitant and year. The biggest increase was that of pork. According to the kind of meat, beef, with 60 kg (61.1%); poultry, with 20 kg (20.4%); pork, with 14 kg (14.4%); and lamb, with 4 kg (4.1%) stand out.

If these figures are analysed with respect to the tons, in year 2012 the consumption per capita of all the kinds of meat was 319,000 tons, that corresponds to a consumption of 270 g/day per capita including all the kinds of meat. From these 319,000 tons, 195,000 are beef; 65,000 poultry; 46,000 pork; and 13,100 lamb.

With respect to pork, 65.2% (30,000 tons) of the consumed pig meat is imported pork (30,000 toneladas), and 34.8% (16,000 tons) corresponds to the domestic market.
