As a result of rising feed prices, pig production costs are at a record high — 173p a kilo. It is becoming increasingly clear that producers need urgent help from processors and retailers to promote British pork and achieve a better price.

The current sky-rocketing of feed costs is putting considerable pressure on pig production cash-flows.
When all costs are taken into account, including depreciation charges, many pig-keepers are now making a significant loss on every pig sold.

BPEX's estimated loss per pig in July is £18 a pig — the highest it has been for over 12 months.
Total production costs are put at 173p a kilo. The average price being received by producers is currently only 150p a kilo.
