Spain and China have strengthened their collaboration in the agri-food sector with the signing of three new protocols that benefit the pork and fishing industries, as part of the Spanish King and Queen's state visit to the People's Republic of China. These agreements expand trade opportunities for the Spanish pork, fishing, and aquaculture sectors.
One of the most important agreements, due to its strategic impact on the swine industry, is the African swine fever (ASF) regionalization agreement, which comes into force upon signature. This agreement sets out the zoning and compartmentalization mutually recognized by both countries, representing a crucial step forward in sanitary and trade management in the event of outbreaks.

Thanks to this protocol, if an outbreak of ASF is detected in a specific area of Spain, only exports from the affected area would be suspended, while exports from regions declared free of the disease would remain open. This system, known as regionalization, allows international trade to continue and protects the industry's economic stability.
The Spanish pork sector holds a strategic position in international trade due to its production, quality, and export capacity. In 2024, Spanish pork exports to China reached 540,000 tons, valued at over €1.097 billion. China is currently the top destination for Spanish pork exports.
