Portugal: Pig slaughter increases 4.7% through September

Pig slaughter in Portugal during the first nine months of 2025 increased 4.7% year-on-year.

The total number of pigs slaughtered in Portugal in the first nine months of 2025 increased by 4.7% (+137,126 heads) compared to the same period of the previous year, rising from 2,928,857 pigs slaughtered between January and September 2024 to 3,065,983 in 2025.

The slaughter weight also increased, rising by 5.6%, meaning that heavier pigs were slaughtered in 2025 than in 2024, increasing from 251,735.0 tons in 2024 to 265,907.4 tons this year. This gives an average carcass weight of 86.7 kg in 2025 compared to 86.0 kg in 2024.

There was a 0.1% increase in the slaughter of piglets (+903 head) in the first nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The number of heads slaughtered was 903,007 compared to 902,104 in the previous year. The slaughter weight increased by 0.3%, going from 6,407.2 tons in 2024 to 6,428.7 tons in 2025, which means that the average carcass weight remained the same, at 7.1 kg.

Regarding cull breeding stock, 33,392 head (+31.6%) were slaughtered between January and September 2025, compared to 25,365 head in 2024. The total weight increased by 35.2%, from 3,752.4 tons in 2024 to 5,074.7 tons in 2025. The average slaughter weight was 152 kg carcass.

In total, 4,002,382 swine were slaughtered and approved for consumption in the first nine months of 2025, a 3.8% increase compared to 2024 when 3,856,326 head were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 277,410.8 tons, representing a 5.9% increase compared to 2024 when 261,894.6 tons were approved for consumption.
