Portugal: Pig slaughter increased 3.8% in 2025

Portugal saw an increase in the total number of pigs slaughtered in 2025.

According to data published by the GPP, provided by INE as preliminary data, total pig slaughter in Portugal in 2025 increased by 3.8% (+151,851 head) year-on-year, going from 3,958,263 pigs slaughtered in 2024 to 4,110,114 in 2025.

The weight slaughtered increased by 6.6%, which means that in 2025, heavier pigs were slaughtered than in 2024, rising from 340,202.3 tons in 2024 to 361,582.0 tons this year. This gives an average carcass weight of 88.0 kg in 2025, compared to 86.0 kg in 2024.

There was a 1.3% increase in piglet slaughter (+16,355 heads) in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The number of heads slaughtered was 1,321,352 compared to 1,304,997 heads the previous year. The slaughter weight increased by 1.4% from 9,442.7 tons in 2024 to 9,375.2 tons in 2025, meaning the average weight remained at 7.1 kg per carcass.

In relation to cull breeding stock, 43,856 head (+23.3%) were slaughtered in 2025 compared to 35,579 head in 2024. The total weight increased by 24.7%, from 5,355.5 tons in 2024 to 6,678.5 tons in 2025. Average slaughter weight 152.3 kg carcass.

In total, 5,475,322 head were slaughtered and approved for consumption in 2025, 3.3% more than in 2024, when 5,298,839 head were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 377,635.8 tons, which represents a 6.4% increase over 2024, when 354,800.5 tons were approved for consumption.
