Portugal increases the number of pigs slaughtered

During the first quarter of this year, the number of pigs slaughtered increased by 6% compared to the same period in 2015 (1,384,315 heads in 2016 vs. 1,306,373 in 2015).

According to data published by the GPP, the number of pigs slaughtered during the first quarter of this year increased by 6% compared to the same period in 2015 (1,384,315 heads in 2016 vs. 1,306,373 in 2015.)

These figures are broken down into 1,132,581 fattening pigs (+2,9%), 242,598 piglets (24%) and 9,136 sows (−10%).

Slaughter weights also increased in both classes, with an increase of 4.6% in fattening pigs and 25.5% in piglets.

With regards to trade, imports of pork fell by 7.7% and exports increased by 12% in the first quarter of 2016, compared to the same period in 2015. By volume, imports amounted to 55,780 t (60,412 in 2015) and exports amounted to 19,086 t (17,046 t in 2015.)
