Last week, an appointment ceremony for the new Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development was held in the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland.

Marek Sawicki received the appointment letter from the hands of President Bronisław Komorowski.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk thanked Minister Kalemba especially for his activity and work during the negotiations of the new budget for agriculture and rural development for the 2014-2020 financial perspective.

He also wished success to the new Minister as regards rapid solving of the problems on the pig market.

After the ceremony in the Presidential Palace the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Marek Sawicki met with journalists in the Ministry's edifice.

He informed about his priorities and pointed out that the key issue requiring urgent settlement is the issue of African swine fever (ASF). This primarily concerns the removal of surplus pigmeat from the buffer zone.

The second task of the Minister for the coming days consists in negotiations on the status of the buffer zone.

“I do not want Poland to be treated as a buffer zone securing against ASF transition from the territory of Belarus and Russia,” informed the new head of the Ministry of Agriculture. At the same time, he stressed that the risk zone should be definitely smaller. The Minister draw attention to the need to discuss this issue on the EU forum since such extensive buffer zones cause huge costs for the Community budget.
