Peru reaffirms growth and consolidation of its swine industry in 2025

Peruvian domestic pork production increased in 2025, and its imports reconfigured, with Brazil consolidating its position as the main foreign supplier.

The Peruvian swine industry saw an increase in slaughter in 2025, keeping in line with the upward trend in domestic pork production. Imports grew moderately and saw a shift in the share of countries of origin, with Brazil becoming the main supplier, pushing Chile into second place. Apparent consumption grew significantly, with domestic production maintaining the majority share and imports contributing less than 10%.

  • Growth in slaughter: Total pig slaughter for 2025 reached 4,054,715 head, representing an increase of 1.6% compared to 2024.
  • Boost in formal slaughter: In 2025, pigs slaughtered in slaughterhouses and processing plants totaled 2,518,403 head, an increase of 8.7% compared to 2024, accounting for 62.1% of the total slaughter.
  • Increase in domestic production: Domestic pork production reached 216,815 tons (t), representing a 3.5% increase compared to the previous year (209,549 t).
  • Production value: The value of pork production in 2025 reached PEN 1,027,412 million (at 2007 prices), up 3.5% from the PEN 992,980 million in the previous year.
  • Regional concentration: At the regional level, the highest production volume was recorded in Lima (Metropolitan and Provinces), accounting for 45.7% of the total, followed by La Libertad (11.2%), Ica (8.4%), Arequipa (5.7%), and Huánuco (4.0%). Together, these five regions accounted for 75.0% of national production in 2025.
  • Moderate increase in imports: Imports of pork products and by-products for 2025 totaled 18,323 tons, representing a 3.7% increase compared to 2024.
  • Main countries of origin: Most of the products imported in 2025 (43.7%) came from Brazil, while Chile and the United States accounted for 41.8% and 8.7%, respectively. In total, these three countries represented nearly 95% of pork imports in the last year.
  • Divergence in import volume by origin: With 8,004 tons consolidated in 2025, products from Brazil registered a 31.7% increase in volume compared to the previous year, while those from Chile and the United States decreased by 1.7% and 23.1%, respectively.

  • Imports by item: 82.5% of total imports in 2025 were represented by five tariff items, corresponding to frozen boneless meat (40.3%), frozen chops and ribs (17.1%), unmelted pork fat (11.7%), other frozen meat (8.2%), and bone-in legs and shoulders (5.1%).
  • Strengthening of apparent consumption: Apparent pork consumption in Peru for 2025 is estimated at 235,138 tons, representing a 3.5% increase compared to 2024.
  • Domestic supply breakdown: Apparent consumption in 2025 consisted of 92% domestic production and 8% imports.
