Peru negotiates pork exports with China

Peru's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Jorge Montenegro, announced the country's interest in exporting pork to China.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) met in his office with the heads of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), Miguel Quevedo, and the General Director of Livestock (DGG), Christian Barrantes, as well as representatives from the Peruvian Pig Farmers Association (APP).

The minister reported that this Friday the vice minister of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China, Hu Wei, will arrive in Lima in front of a large delegation, where Minagri will engage with these officials to explore the possibility of initiating procedures for the entry of Peruvian pork.

The head of Senasa, Miguel Quevedo, highlighted the tremendous possibilities that the Peruvian pig sector has to access the Chinese market, the negotiation process of which could last months or years, with the decision ultimately being up to the Chinese authorities.

Facts about Peruvian pig farming

There are 598,363 pig producers in Peru, of which 76% have less than 49 head of pigs.

Pork production in recent years has increased by 5.1% between 2012 and 2016.

Per capita consumption of pork is estimated at 7.6 kilograms, with the departments of Arequipa, Lima, and La Libertad consuming 18.2, 8.5, and 8.2 kg respectively.
