Regulation (EU) 2026/687, approved on 19 March 2026, sets out safeguard measures governing trade in agricultural products between the European Union and Mercosur, with particular focus on the meat sector. Beef, pork and poultry have been classified as sensitive products, ensuring close monitoring within the EU market.

The regulation states that if imports increase by more than 5% in volume or prices fall significantly, safeguard measures may be triggered. These include suspending further tariff reductions or increasing import duties. In critical situations, the European Commission may also impose provisional measures within a maximum of 21 days.
These protective measures may remain in place for up to four years, with the possibility of extension, allowing the European meat industry to adapt to imports from Mercosur.
