This week, the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (Sape) and the Integrated Agricultural Development Company of Santa Catarina (Cidasc) published a new ordinance on biosecurity in pig farming. Sape Ordinance No. 50/2025 describes a set of good practices that must be followed on technified (commercial) farms, such as controlling access to the facility, disinfection procedures, and waste disposal.
The adoption of biosecurity practices and procedures on farms is essential to ensure animal health and minimize the risks of contamination and disease spread. Many farms in Santa Catarina have already voluntarily implemented the sanitary measures recommended by the ordinance, as these measures benefit meat production and export.

Once they come into force in 60 days, these guidelines will be mandatory for all technified farms. Some measures are organizational and hygiene-related, while others will require structural adjustments. The standard will also establish deadlines for existing farms to comply with the new measures, ranging from 12 to 24 months, depending on the adequacy.
To ensure that small producers can also comply with the requirements, the State Government has created the SC Animal Biosecurity Program, which provides financing of up to R$ 70,000 per farm, with a subsidy of up to 40%, in addition to a one-year grace period and payment in five annual installments.
Animal health is the distinguishing factor that enabled pork from Santa Catarina to reach 78 countries last year, generating US$1.7 billion. Asian countries are the main market for these products.
