Wageningen Economic Research has developed a new cost price calculation for pigs with the "Beter Leven" (Better Life) quality mark in the Netherlands. The "Beter Leven" mark is associated with improved animal welfare standards.

The new calculation was developed on behalf of the Pig Farming Producer Organization (POV). The new cost price calculation aims to provide a more accurate reflection of the actual costs incurred by farmers in raising pigs under these higher welfare standards. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to support sustainable and ethical practices in pig farming.

The intention is that the cost price calculations are updated annually for investment amounts, prices, costs, and technical results. And every four weeks there is an update based on the most recent feed prices.

The next step will be to discuss this with the POV members and the chain partners, which is planned for early 2024.
