Netherlands – Increase in the purchases of ecological products

For every euro spent on alimentation, 2.3 cents are spent on ecological products, as is shown by data from the “biomonitor”, corresponding to 2009, that have just been published. The Dutch consumer spent a total of € 646.4 million last year on ecological products, while in 2008 the total was € 583 million.

The Dutch consumer spent a total of € 646.4 million last year on ecological products, while in 2008 the total was € 583 million.

Sales of ecological meat and meat products increased by 13.3% in 2009. In total, the sales of meat and meat by-products reached € 94.5 million, of which € 4.97 million was spent on products with an ecological origin, with a market participation of 2.4%, a figure that in 2008 had been 2.2%. In 2009, ecological butchers added pig meat to their supply. The Netherlands have the highest sales of ecological pig meat in Europe.
