Italy: increase in the importation of live pigs

During the first 5 months of this year, the importation of live pigs of less and more than 50 kg liveweight has increased by 3.6% and 8%, respectively.

The latest data from the Italian Statistics Institute show that during the first five months of this year, the importation of live pigs of less than 50 kg liveweight has increased by 3.6% with respect to the same period in year 2012, with a rise of the pigs that come from The Netherlands, that has beaten Denmark as the main supplier of piglets. The pigs pertaining to this category imported from Denmark have suffered a fall by 9.0%, whilst those imported from The Netherlands have risen by 27.3%.

On the other hand, the importation of pigs of more than 50 kg liveweight has also experienced a rise: in this case by 8% during the period comprised between January and May 2013, in comparison with January- May 2012. With respect to this category, The Netherlands was the main supplier, with an increase by 28.7%, whilst the second and third providers, Spain and France, experienced a fall by 20% and 8.8%, respectively.
