A market share of almost 90 percent of all slaughters is being carried out by no more than just the Top 5 sow slaughterers. Here you can see that the sows-for-slaughter market is by far more concentrated than is the pigs-for-slaughter market.

Toennies has the lead by a huge margin within the ISN ranking. About 486 000 (equal to about 45 percent) of all sows slaughtered in Germany are being slaughtered at the Toennies abattoirs. Westfleisch ranks second with slaughtering 182 000 sows. Here it should be noted that a significant part of the slaughters were carried out at Tummel’s / Schoeppingen as a subcontractor. Furthermore, Tummel carry out 32 000 sow slaughters under their own management, thus ranking 7th. Two specialised sow slaughterers follow on ranks 3 and 4: Uhlen in Lengerich (115 700 sows slaughtered) and Westphal in Herzebrock (100 300 sows slaughtered). Those companies’ shares in the total number of sow slaughters are 9 and 10 percent respectively. These two are followed suit by the BMR abattoir in Garrel (ranking 5th), slaughtering 95 000 sows as a subcontractor. In contrast to their ranking among the Top 10 pig slaughter companies, Vion find themselves lagging behind in the sow slaughter ranking. Slaughtering as many as 25 000 sows, they just hold a share of 2.3 percent, equal to rank 8.

These findings show clearly that the sow-slaughter market is being dominated by just a few companies. Other companies carry out sow slaughters just on the side. Moreover, major companies are cutting up large quantities of sow halves they buy from the outside.
The sow feeders are caught between two stools as to marketing of their sows for slaughter. On the one hand, they require strong commercial partners. Yet, on the other hand enough alternatives need to be maintained with regard to marketing.
