In the first half of 2011, about 4 million tonnes of meat were produced commercially in Germany. That was an increase in production of 1.1% (+42,700 tonnes) on the same period a year earlier.

As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the trend of continuous strong increases in meat production, which had been observed for several years (on average +4.0% since 2005), did not continue.

The factors mainly contributing to that development were the small increase in the slaughtering of pigs during the first half of 2011 and the decrease in cattle slaughtering.
