France sees rebound in crop production

In 2025, climatic conditions were largely normal, despite a dry spring and a very hot summer, leading to a sharp rebound in crop production.

Grain production

In 2025, French cereal production is expected to rebound strongly, reaching 62.9 million tons (Mt), an increase of 16% compared to 2024 and 3% compared to the 2020-2024 average. This increase is mainly due to better yields and a slight increase in cultivated area.

The soft wheat harvest is expected to increase significantly, reaching 33.3 million tons, thanks to yields above the five-year average and an increase in the area sown. Durum wheat production is also expected to increase despite a reduction in acreage, thanks to much better yields than in 2024. The barley harvest is expected to rebound strongly to 11.9 Mt, also driven by higher yields than last year, while grain corn is expected to decline by 10% due to hot summer weather that hurt yields.

With this overall increase in production, France would have a much larger exportable surplus than in 2024: international wheat sales, particularly outside the European Union, would increase by 43% in 2025, and barley sales by 14%.

Against a backdrop of abundant global harvests, cereal prices are trending downward: soft wheat delivered to Rouen has fallen by 11% year-on-year since July 2025, while the price of barley remains stable at around €185/t.

Oilseed production

In 2025, oilseed production is expected to reach 6.5 million tons, up 10.8% from 2024 and 7.5% from the 2020-2024 average.

Rapeseed production is expected to increase by 17.5% year-on-year to 4.6 Mt, driven by higher yields despite a reduction in planted area. In contrast, sunflower and soybean harvests are expected to decline by 3.0%. Protein crop harvests are expected to increase by 18.9%, driven by an increase in cultivated area and high yields.

Between July and October 2025, oilseed prices showed contrasting trends: rapeseed prices fell slightly, while sunflower prices rose.
