On Saturday, June 14, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar in the district of Olpe, near the municipality of Kirchhundem. This is the first positive ASF case in wild boar in North Rhine-Westphalia. A licensed hunter found the animal dead in a forest near Kirchhundem.
Over the weekend, during the ongoing investigation of the case near Kirchhundem municipality, more wild boar carcasses have been discovered, which are also suspected ASF cases and are pending confirmation by the FLI.

The district of Olpe, the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia are working closely together and have been in contact since Friday. The responsible state authorities in the federal states have been informed, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection is also in contact with the responsible federal authorities.
A restricted zone will be established around the site. The veterinary authorities of the districts and municipalities affected by the restriction zone are organizing the search, sampling, recovery, and disposal of carcasses in coordination with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The crisis structures of the affected districts have been activated. A team of FLI epidemiology experts will support the Olpe district veterinary authority on site.
