The European Union's Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food, and Feed has unanimously approved Spain's proposal for new zoning in the area affected by African swine fever (ASF). Based on this new zoning, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food will draw up a program that will allow farms located within the zones to move animals and products, provided they comply with certain sanitary measures.
The approved proposal includes two zones: zone one, for surveillance, where no cases have been detected, and zone two, which covers the area where outbreaks have been detected. Each zone will have its own requirements and measures.

This new zoning will replace the current one that was established when the first case was detected at the end of November in Cerdanyola del Vallés (Barcelona), a high-risk area within a 6-kilometer radius, and a lower-risk area within a 20-kilometer radius, which was cordoned off and fenced in and where control and surveillance work have been carried out.
The new zoning is not as circular and is established according to administrative areas (municipalities), with a more irregular shape adapted to municipal boundaries and geographical features, although it covers 20 kilometers at its narrowest point.
So far, there have been 31 outbreaks with a total of 162 dead wild boars in seven municipalities: Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Terrassa, Rubí, Molins de Rei, and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. All of them are located within a 20-kilometer radius of the first outbreak, which was fenced off. All cases have occurred in wild animals, with no pig farms affected.
Market evolution
Price trends have been analyzed since the ASF outbreak in wild boar was declared last November. In week 5 of this year, the price for class E carcasses was €1.285/kg, which is 32.94% lower than the price for the same week last year and also below the average prices for the last five years (-26.13%).
