The Agriculture and Fisheries Council of the European Union, held on 30 March 2026, brought together agriculture ministers from member states in their regular monthly meeting to address the main challenges facing the EU agrifood sector. Discussions focused on market developments, trade policy and the sustainability of production systems amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and rising costs.
A key item on the agenda was the review of the first year of implementation of the Vision for Agriculture and Food 2040. Ministers welcomed progress on issues such as CAP simplification and generational renewal, while stressing the need to further strengthen resilience, competitiveness and food security. Upcoming initiatives were also highlighted, including a dedicated livestock strategy, plans on protein supply and fertilisers, and measures to advance digitalisation.

Trade-related issues were another central topic. Member states supported safeguard measures included in the EU-Mercosur agreement and called for similar provisions in other trade deals. They also backed the European Commission’s approach to reinforcing reciprocity, including the potential ban on products containing substances not authorised in the EU and stricter maximum residue limits. Strengthening border controls and increasing audits of third countries were also emphasised.
Rising production costs, particularly for energy and fertilisers, remain a major concern affecting farm profitability. In this context, ministers urged the Commission to develop targeted measures to mitigate these costs, especially if the energy crisis persists.
Finally, ministers discussed the energy transition in fisheries and aquaculture, focusing on reducing dependence on fossil fuels while maintaining economic viability. Challenges such as ageing fleets, limited investment capacity and low profitability were identified, highlighting the need for coordinated EU support and adequate funding mechanisms.
