Drop in pork production in Germany

Despite the drop in pork production, the total meat production increased slightly in the first half of 2018 in comparison with 2017.

In the first six months of 2018, 4.0 million tonnes of meat were produced by commercial slaughterhouses in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that meat production increased by roughly 8,400 tonnes (+0.2%) compared with the first six months of 2017.

With 2.7 million tonnes, the volume of pork produced in commercial abattoirs was 0.8% lower in the first half of 2018 in comparison with 2017 (-20,700 tonnes). With a total of 28.4 million pigs, 243,600 animals less were slaughtered (-0.8%).

Pork (66.7%) represented the largest share of the total industrial meat production, followed by chicken (19.7%) and beef (13.4%).
